El Segundo Real Estate

El Segundo is a city in Los Angeles County, California. Located on the Santa Monica Bay, it was incorporated on January 18, 1917, and is one of the Beach Cities of Los Angeles County and part of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments. The El Segundo and Los Angeles coastal area was first settled by the Tongva (or Gabrieleños) and Chumash Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. The area was once a part of Rancho Sausal Redondo (“Round Willow Patch Ranch”). Rancho Sausal Redondo extended from Playa Del Rey in the North to Redondo Beach in the South. Originally a Mexican land grant owned by Antonio Ygnacio Avila, the rancho was later purchased by a Scottish baronet named Sir Robert Burnett. After his return to Scotland, the property was purchased by then current manager of the rancho, Daniel Freeman. Daniel Freeman sold portions of the rancho to multiple owners. George H. Peck (1856–1940) owned the 840 acres (3.4 km2) of land the Chevron Refinery now sits on. Peck also developed land in neighboring El Porto where a street still stands to his name.

El Segundo, earned its name (“the second” in Spanish) as it was the site of the second Standard Oil refinery on the West Coast (the first was at Richmond in Northern California), when Standard Oil of California purchased the 840 acres (3.4 km2) of farm land in 1911. a small, charming residential community of over 16,000 persons that is also home to many of the nation’s aerospace and defense powerhouses, the Los Angeles Air Force Base and The Aerospace Corporation. A number of major corporations such as Mattel, Unocal, and Computer Sciences Corporation are headquartered here along with the Los Angeles Lakers, Kings and Sparks. The City is spread over 5.5 square miles and bounded by Los Angeles International Airport to the north, the City of Manhattan Beach to the south, the Pacific Ocean and City of Los Angeles to the west, and the City of Hawthorne to the east. Reflecting the significant number of major businesses located here is our daytime workforce that approaches 70,000. The City is an interesting and successful mix of small town living and sophisticated business operations. In fact, we are known as the “small town for big business”.

Despite our location in busy Los Angeles County, the City has been able to maintain its small town reputation since incorporation on January 18, 1917. In fact, the City provides a free bus shuttle service, which is widely enjoyed, from the east side of town to the downtown at lunchtime. The City is known for its small town atmosphere and charming downtown and also for its superb community services. The school district enjoys an excellent reputation. Our Police and Fire Departments have unparalleled response times. And, the surrounding South Bay region is the location of superior institutions of higher learning.
